This is a graphics installation tip that we preach in our class. It’s necessary to use Primer 94 in any situation where the graphics material has a chance to stray away from the medium in which it’s applied to.
The 3M Tape Primer 94 is an adhesion promoter that is used to keep ControlTac films from pulling away from common areas such as cut edges, stressed areas and areas where you have stretched the vinyl. It’s very easy to overuse this product so be careful!
When using Primer 94, dip a cloth that has been folded into a small square into the solvent. No more than ¼-inch of primer should be used on cut edges. Also, it’s best practice not to dip the same applicator into the primer more than once. This is just to ensure that no contaminants are making it back into the solvent.
Most graphics installers will tell you that using Primer 94 before the install can be time consuming. If you’d prefer to skip this step, then try using the new 3M V3 formula, such as the 380 series, for your next graphics installation.
What are your thoughts on Primer 94 and other pre-installation prep?
